Bolted joints and riveted connections are important elements in steel structures. In typical engineering structures, thousands of bolts may be used per unit, for example in bridges and wind-turbines. The integrity of the entire structure is in some cases dependent on the integrity of the bolts. Currently, inspection of bolted joints is carried out by frequent and costly site visits.
